Vanishing Point

Madeleine Gera’s exhibition, ‘Vanishing Point’ offers a compelling exploration of themes that resonate deeply with the contemporary world. Through her evocative works, Gera delves into the complexities of the human condition, environmental issues, and the intricate relationship between past and present, inviting viewers to engage meaningfully with these pressing concerns.

The exhibition is thoughtfully divided into several sub-themes, each addressing a distinct aspect of modern life. In the theme of Carnival, highlighted by the piece ‘The Doctor’s Carnival Party’, Gera situates the scene in Venice, where masked figures create a paradoxical and taunting juxtaposition. The ambiguity of their interactions — whether they are communicating or avoiding contact — mirrors the duality of Carnival itself, a passage from darkness to light, symbolizing joy and freedom before the austerity of Lent.

Another significant theme is Greek Mythology, where Gera uses mythological references to comment on contemporary issues like pollution and overdevelopment in Malta. By blending ancient myths with modern concerns, she critiques the environmental degradation threatening her homeland.

In her Urban Rhythm series, Gera embraces the beauty of life, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of Valletta, where she resides. These works offer a joyful contrast to the exhibition’s more somber themes, celebrating the dynamism of urban life.

Nature is central to Gera’s work, with many pieces reflecting her deep connection to the natural world. She emphasizes the often fraught relationship between humanity and nature, underscoring the need for balance and respect.

In the Man vs. Man theme, Gera mourns the loss of indigenous cultures and calls for greater awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Her work serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to protect these communities before it is too late.

‘Vanishing Point’ ultimately invites viewers to reflect on their place in the world and their actions' impact on the environment and humanity. Through her art, Gera encourages us to confront difficult questions and consider the future we wish to create, urging us to act before it’s too late.
