Cristian Sammut
Cristian Sammut is a visual artist whose work is rooted in gestural, expressive brushwork across oil, acrylic, and mixed media. Blending figuration with strong elements of abstraction, his practice delves into instinctive, automatic, and subconscious modes of creation, echoing the impulses of early modern human mark-making and the raw expression found in outsider art.
A self-taught artist and an architect, Sammut is drawn to unplanned, unfiltered approaches to artmaking. His previous architectural work explored collective impulses for ornamentation, concepts that continue to inform his visual art practice today. His paintings are deeply connected to ideas of the shared human experience, emphasising the act of creation itself as a vital gesture.
Sammut is shaped by the close-knit support systems and emotional intimacy of local communities. He gravitates towards the authentic, unrefined energy of art made outside large scale societies, where the focus lies not on thinking, but on being.
Cristian lives and works between London and Malta. He completed a course in oil painting through the CityLit Visual Arts Programme (2020) and has exhibited with The Queer Museum as part of ARC: Art from Rebellion and Connection at the Cookhouse Gallery (UAL) (2024).
