ANTOINE FARRUGIA

Antoine Farrugia (b.1969) was born and lives in Mqabba, Malta. The artist's primary driving force lies within the limestone medium; its various geological characteristics and pliability provide the momentum to give life to organic, undulating forms; energy that transcends the material itself, resulting in a personal endeavour to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Such strength reverberates in other materials as well, including marble and steel, resulting in dynamic and monumental sculptures. The stillness and chastity of his works catapult the viewer into a world of sensual forms that are emblematic of Farrugia's oeuvre.
Antoine has held various solo exhibitions and participated in numerous collective shows, including two editions of the Mdina Contemporary Art Biennale in 2015 and 2017. He was invited to international symposia and workshops in Germany and China. In 2023/2024, he completed a major commission for a prominent local establishment, producing an extensive series of sculptures within a tight timeframe, an undertaking that further affirmed his dedication, discipline, and creative vision.
In 2024, one of Antoine’s sculptures was successfully auctioned at The Grand Charity Auction Top Charity, initiated by the Omenaa Foundation, where his piece fetched €75,000 for charity. His works can be found in private collections and public spaces in Malta and abroad.
