The Nectar of Sleep
The Nectar of Sleep stems from Alexia Baldacchino's deeply personal relationship with sleep. Inspired by her own lifelong insomnia, as well as her mother's similar experience, the exhibition is the culmination of over a year of research into the elusive space between wakefulness and dreams.
Drawing inspiration from the atmospheric qualities of Renaissance art, particularly Leonardo da Vinci's La Scapigliata, Baldacchino embraces softness over precision. Her paintings favour diffused light, gentle clouds, and hazy forms, creating dreamlike spaces where nothing feels entirely resolved. Like the unfinished masterpiece that inspires her, the works remain intentionally open, reflecting the fluid and ever-changing nature of dreams and memory.
A contemporary dimension emerges through the artist's fascination with modern sleep culture. Data collected from a sleep-monitoring app, with its visual wave patterns and fragmented records of rest, becomes an unexpected source of inspiration. The exhibition also quietly questions how sleep has become a commodity, measured, optimised, and marketed through wellness trends, influencers, and routines that promise the "perfect" night's rest.
Accompanied by a soundscape inspired by Renaissance and Medieval music, The Nectar of Sleep creates an immersive environment where historical influences meet contemporary reflections on sleep and wellbeing. Through atmospheric imagery and an intentionally open visual language, Baldacchino invites viewers to slow down and enter a contemplative state where uncertainty becomes a source of possibility. Rather than offering definitive interpretations, the exhibition becomes a poetic threshold between the seen and the unseen, suggesting that within sleep lies a profound capacity for healing, creativity, and self-discovery.
