ALFRED BUTTIEGIEG

Alfred Buttigieg (b. 1956, Malta) is an established playwright. This is his first foray into ceramics.

A founder member of the avant-garde theatre group Ateatru in the 80s, his first full-length play, Ir-Rewwixta tal-Qassisin was premiered at the Manoel Theatre in 1986. Other plays include Mela Hawn Xi Manikomjuand L-Interrogazzjoni which won him the National Book Prize for Drama in 2022. Buttigieg is also the author of Dik il-Qtajra which was considered obscene and banned when it was published. He has moreover enjoyed a long career in education, being Head of School at San Anton Middle School and in the state sector.

After retiring from education in 2020 he embarked on a course in ceramics at the Malta Society of Art with Nadyanne Mangion. This was an experience that motivated him to explore figurative ceramics. He finds this art form a radically different experience from writing but enjoys the challenge posed by both the limitations and freedom it provides him.
