In the name of the Mother...
and of the Daughter...

From a tender age, Nik Keter has been preoccupied with the lack of recognition of feminine power. During her primary years, she refused to do the sign of the cross, instead using the left hand and saying: In the name of the Mother, and the Daughter and the Holy Spirit...

The exhibition reveals the TRANSFORMATIONS of the Mother – drawing a parallel between the seasonal transformations of Mother Earth and the archetypal transformations of the Mother, using religious iconography and poetry (the transformation of language) as a vehicle.

Our first lessons in life are about safety, and the Mother is our first teacher of what the world holds. We can only move through the world fearlessly – therefore allowing ourselves to reach full potential – IF we diminish the fear which holds us back, which can only be soothed through the nurturing archetype of the Mother – both in her divine, archetypal forms, like Mary or other goddess figures, and her more approachable forms – Mother Earth, who provides food, shelter and water, or in the hearts of loved ones.

This is the debut solo exhibition for Nik Keter. Following the Covid quarantine Nik began a devotional practice and was naturally drawn to the same goddesses and Mary that she had been devoted to as a child, which allowed her to set her fears aside and produce this exhibition: in honour of Her, and as a message to others to embrace Her in their lives, both in prayer (regardless of one’s faith) as well as in our daily lives and actions towards people. We are all called to be Mothers; as to be a mother is to give unconditionally – like the Earth below our feet and Mary to Christ.
